Discover the Primate Capital of the World – Kibale National Park

Kibale National Park, located in western Uganda, is celebrated as the “Primate Capital of the World” and one of the most beautiful tropical rainforests in Africa. This lush paradise is home to the largest population of chimpanzees in East Africa, along with 12 other primate species, making it one of the best places for primate tracking on the continent.

With its rich biodiversity, scenic forest trails, and vibrant local communities, Kibale National Park offers a unique blend of wildlife encounters and immersive nature experiences — a must-visit destination with PackupGo Safari.

An Overview of Kibale National Park

Established in 1993, Kibale National Park covers 795 square kilometers and forms part of Uganda’s extensive forest corridor that extends south to Queen Elizabeth National Park. The park lies near the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains, approximately 320 kilometers west of Kampala and just a few kilometers from the town of Fort Portal.

Kibale’s landscape features a mix of dense tropical rainforest, swamps, grasslands, and crater lakes, offering an exceptional setting for nature walks, primate tracking, and eco-tourism adventures.

Chimpanzee Tracking Experience

The highlight of any visit to Kibale is the unforgettable chimpanzee tracking safari. With over 1,500 chimpanzees, the park offers one of the best opportunities in Africa to see these intelligent primates in the wild.

Treks usually begin early in the morning and take visitors deep into the rainforest, where expert guides lead the way while interpreting chimp behavior, calls, and movements.

Visitors can also opt for a Chimpanzee Habituation Experience, allowing more time (up to four hours) with a semi-habituated group — a rare and intimate adventure.

Wildlife and Nature

Kibale’s biodiversity extends far beyond chimpanzees. The park is home to over 70 species of mammals and 13 species of primates, including:

  • Red colobus monkey

  • L’Hoest’s monkey

  • Black-and-white colobus monkey

  • Grey-cheeked mangabey

  • Olive baboon

  • Vervet monkey

Occasionally, visitors may also spot forest elephants, bush pigs, duikers, and buffaloes moving through the dense forest.

Birdlife

With more than 375 bird species, Kibale National Park is one of Uganda’s best birding destinations. Notable birds include:

  • African pitta (a rare seasonal migrant)

  • Great blue turaco

  • Black bee-eater

  • Yellow-spotted nicator

  • Crowned eagle

  • Green-breasted pitta (a birdwatcher’s highlight)

The nearby Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary also offers excellent birding and community-guided nature walks.
