We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance for every trip. Safari areas can be far from major hospitals, so good cover really matters.
What your policy should include
- Medical treatment and hospital costs
- Emergency evacuation and repatriation
- Trip cancellation and interruption
- Lost or delayed baggage
Climbing and adventure activities
Standard policies often exclude high-altitude trekking and activities such as rafting. If you plan to climb Kilimanjaro or Mount Meru, check that the policy covers the full altitude.
Air evacuation
Medical air-rescue memberships, such as those offered by Flying Doctors services in East Africa, can add useful protection, but they do not replace insurance.
Zanzibar
Zanzibar has introduced a mandatory insurance requirement for visitors. Check the current rules before you travel.
Keep your policy number and emergency phone number with you, and share them with your guide.
