Money & tipping

Currency

Each country has its own currency: the Tanzanian shilling, the Kenyan shilling and the Ugandan shilling. US dollars are widely known in the tourism industry, but acceptance varies, so bring a mix and ask us what you are likely to need.

Cash and cards

  • Bring clean, recent US dollar notes, because worn or old notes are often refused.
  • ATMs are found in cities and larger towns but not inside parks.
  • Card payments are possible at many lodges, sometimes with a fee. Tell your bank before you travel.

Tipping

Tipping is not compulsory, but it is a customary way to thank people for good service. Many travellers budget for their guide, lodge staff and, on mountain trips, the guides, cooks and porters. Ask us for a suggestion that suits your group size and trip length.

Shopping

Local crafts make wonderful souvenirs, and polite bargaining is normal at markets. Avoid products made from wildlife, such as ivory or shells from protected species.
