Around wildlife
- Always follow your guide's instructions.
- Stay inside the vehicle unless your guide says it is safe to get out.
- Keep your voice low, and never feed or call to animals.
- At camps, ask for an escort after dark where one is provided.
In towns and cities
Use the same common sense as anywhere in the world: keep valuables out of sight, use safe transport at night and leave spare documents in a secure place. Check your own government's travel advice before you leave.
Respecting people and culture
- Ask before you photograph someone.
- Dress modestly in villages and in Stone Town, particularly away from the beach.
- Learn a few words of Swahili. “Asante” means thank you.
Travelling lightly
Reduce plastic, stick to marked tracks and buy from local people where you can. Park fees and local jobs help protect these places for the future.
