Step Into the Misty Jungles and Meet the Gentle Giants of Africa

Deep within the emerald forests of Uganda lies one of the most remarkable wildlife encounters on Earth — mountain gorilla trekking. This once-in-a-lifetime experience allows you to stand face-to-face with these majestic primates in their natural home.

At Packup & Go Safari, we take you on a journey into the heart of Uganda’s wilderness, where every step brings you closer to understanding and protecting one of the world’s most endangered species.

Where to Go Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Uganda is home to over half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, and they can only be found in two national parks:

 1. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bwindi is Uganda’s most famous gorilla trekking destination. Its dense rainforest, ancient trees, and misty atmosphere create a magical experience.

  • Over 20 habituated gorilla families

  • Located in southwestern Uganda

  • Offers both standard and luxury lodges nearby

2. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area, Mgahinga offers a quieter, less crowded trekking experience. It’s perfect for those seeking exclusivity and scenic volcanic landscapes.

  • Home to the Nyakagezi gorilla family

  • Beautiful views of the Virunga Volcanoes

  • Ideal for combination safaris with Rwanda

Gorilla Trekking Permits in Uganda

You’ll need a gorilla trekking permit to join this activity.

Current cost (2025):

  • Foreign Non-Residents: USD 800 per person

  • Foreign Residents: USD 700 per person

  • East African Citizens: UGX 300,000

Permits are limited to 8 visitors per gorilla group per day, so booking early (at least 3–6 months in advance) is highly recommended.

Packup & Go Safari handles all permit arrangements as part of your Uganda safari package.

What to Expect on the Trek

Each trek begins early in the morning after a briefing at the park headquarters. You’ll be assigned a gorilla family and guided by expert rangers through the dense forest.

The experience typically involves:

  1. Briefing and group allocation (based on fitness level).

  2. Hike through the forest, which can take 1–5 hours depending on gorilla location.

  3. One magical hour with a gorilla family — watching, photographing, and observing them up close (minimum 7 meters distance).

  4. Return trek and certificate presentation.

Pro Tip: Treks vary in difficulty. Inform your tour operator if you prefer an easier or moderate hike — we’ll request a suitable group for you. What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking

The terrain is often muddy, steep, and slippery — so being prepared is key.

Essential items:

  • Sturdy hiking boots (waterproof with good grip)

  • Long-sleeve shirts and trousers (for protection from insects and thorns)

  • Rain jacket or poncho

  • Garden gloves (to grip vegetation)

  • Walking stick (usually provided at park gate)

  • Reusable water bottle & packed lunch

  • Camera (no flash)

  • Gaiters and insect repellent

Optional: Hire a local porter — not only to carry your backpack but also to support local communities.

Gorilla Trekking Rules & Etiquette

To protect both you and the gorillas, Uganda Wildlife Authority enforces strict guidelines:

  • Keep at least 7 meters (21 feet) away from gorillas.

  • Do not touch the gorillas, even if they approach you.

  • No flash photography.

  • If you feel unwell, you’ll be asked not to trek (gorillas can catch human illnesses).

  • Speak softly and follow ranger instructions at all times.

These measures ensure a safe and sustainable experience for both visitors and gorillas.

Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Gorilla trekking is possible year-round, but the best months are during the dry seasons:

  • June – September

  • December – February

These months offer easier hiking conditions and clearer forest paths. However, the green season (March–May, October–November) is excellent for photographers — the forest is lush, and lodges offer discounted rates.

Where to Stay

Packup & Go Safari partners with top lodges near Bwindi and Mgahinga to ensure your comfort:

  • Luxury: Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge, Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp

  • Mid-Range: Buhoma Lodge, Mahogany Springs

  • Budget: Ride 4 a Woman Guesthouse, Rushaga Gorilla Haven

Each property provides cozy accommodation, delicious meals, and warm Ugandan hospitality.

Conservation Impact

Every permit purchased contributes directly to gorilla conservation and community development. A portion of the fees supports local schools, health clinics, and anti-poaching initiatives.

When you trek responsibly with Packup & Go Safari, you’re helping secure a future for these gentle giants and the people who protect them.
